Fleas & Ticks
Fleas and Ticks
Fleas and ticks are small biting insects that can infest the fur and feathers of animals. They can also bite humans. These pests are typically brown or black. Ticks can carry a variety of diseases, including Lyme Disease, which can pose a risk to humans. Ticks and fleas can live indoors or outdoors. They are often carried indoors by humans and animals clinging to the clothing or fur of a human or animal.
Fleas
There are more than 2,000 species of fleas in the world. Their narrow bodies are covered with hard plates and tiny hairs that allow them to move easily through the fur of an animal or the hair of a human. While they cannot fly and do not have wings, they can leap great distances to attach to a host and feed on their blood. Flea bites can be uncomfortable and painful. They can also become irritated if the host scratches at the bite.
Ticks
Ticks live in warm, humid areas of the world. They have pear shaped bodies with eight legs. Soft ticks have mouth parts on the underside of their bodies while hard ticks have shields and a mouth structure similar to a beak. Ticks feed on their hosts by sucking their blood and have been known to spread diseases in people and animals, including Lyme Disease.
